In a recent address, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), issued a stark warning regarding Nigeria's food importation policy, highlighting its potential to severely damage the country's agricultural sector. Adesina emphasized that Nigeria's reliance on food imports could undermine local farming efforts and disrupt the progress made in achieving food security.

Adesina pointed out that Nigeria has the capacity to be self-sufficient in food production and even become a significant exporter. However, current policies promoting food imports could erode the incentives for local farmers, leading to reduced agricultural productivity and economic instability in rural communities.

The AfDB President stressed the importance of supporting local agriculture through improved infrastructure, access to finance, and investment in modern farming techniques. By bolstering the domestic agricultural sector, Nigeria can ensure sustainable growth, reduce dependency on imports, and enhance food security.

Dr. Adesina's insights underscore the critical need for policy shifts that prioritize and protect the interests of Nigerian farmers, fostering a robust and self-reliant agricultural industry.
